As a parent, or as someone who works with children on a regular basis, it can be hard to believe that you child has had a full day of fun and learning, especially when relying on your toddler or kinder to tell you about their day. Asking kids about their day at school is one of the most tedious conversations, and could easily be mistaken for an uneventful, mediocre day, like this one:
Adult: “How was your day?”
Child: “Good.”
Adult: “What did you learn?’”
Child: “nothing”.
Believe it or not, there are some really simple and effective ways you can encourage kids to share a little more with you. The most simple of all is changing the way you ask them about their day! With that in mind, here is a list of 15 different ways you can ask “How was your day?”.
1. What is something you did today that you’d love to do every day?
2. What do you know today that you didn’t know yesterday?
3. Tell me something that made you laugh.
4. Did anything make you feel frustrated?
5. What was the best thing that happened?
6. Did you find out anything interesting?
7. What did you do that made your teacher smile?
8. Did you learn any new words?
9. Who did you play with?
10. What was your least favorite part of the day?
11. Did you do something kind for someone?
12. Did someone do something kind for you?
13. Did anything make you feel sad or happy?
14. What was the hardest part of your day?
